Northdale Horticulture is a registered charity providing valued occupation and work based activities in woodwork, nursery work, Arts and crafts and landscape gardening. Located on the outskirts of Northallerton, North Yorkshire , approximately fifty adults with a learning disability attend the service on a weekly basis and work in one or more of the charity's four work departments.

Northdale Horticulture aims to:

  • Provide valued occupation in horticulture, woodwork and arts and crafts for people who have a learning disability.
  • Promote and encourage open and sheltered employment.
  • Promote personal development through continuing education.

Northdale supports service users to achieve their full potential via work, creativity and companionship. Everyone attending the service is encouraged to make as full a contribution as their personal circumstances will allow and everyone’s contribution is considered of equal value.

Northdale recognises the importaance work can have at the centre of an individual's life. Many rewards, not just financial can be found in the work place, such as self-esteem, personal achievement and sense a of belonging.

Individuals attending Northdale are encouraged to develop a range of work skills within the supportive environment's small workshops. The work undertaken is often broken down into a number of smaller tasks that provide work for the whole group. For example when potting plants on the nursery someone may fill the pot whilst someone else places the plant. Another person will then label the plant whilst someone else water and takes to a polytunnel to grow on..

The deconstruction of a job into its component tasks allows individuals of all ability to make a full contribution to the work at hand. This allows everyone involved to share in the success and satisfaction of creating the end product.
